Carcinoma of the thyroid, which occurs world-wide, is a rare cause of fatal malignant disease, accounting for some four hundred deaths each year in England and Wales, compared with thirty-five thousand from carcinoma of the lung and over thirteen thousand from carcinoma of the breast. It is nearly three times more common in females than in males (Fig. 16.2).
